My 2011 By the Numbers (kinda-sorta)/ Why You Dont Need an Advertising Budget to Get Referrals / How One Person Can Change Your Biz Landscape Last year, I gave you this. This year, I give you this: I hesitated putting this out there (hence the January 12th post), but something pulled me towards it. There was so much of it that was eye-opening for me, and when somethings eye-opening for me, then I automatically think of you kids. While I was uncomfortable posting it with the numbers exposed, it feels good to have em blurred but still show you (a) how my revenue streams play out and (b) how much of my money comes from personalized coaching! When I saw that about $10K of my entire salary was from non-coaching streams.I mightve hyperventilated a bit. I already knew I was cutting my client sessions from a 30-40/mo to 10-ish a month (as it stands, Ill be doing 10-20/mo til May at the earliest), and my brain started reeling. How can I cut my coaching by more than half and still meet my financial goals for 2012 (yes, I have a number in mind thats about 35% higher than what I made in 2011)?! Thankfully, the newfound hippy-dippy in me starting breathing regularly again when I placed trus t in raising my rates and prepping for my Clubhouse (opening on Tue the 17th!). I started thinking about the time Id have to write blog posts, workbooks, book proposals, books and do virtual workshops and, well, anything I fancy with the extra whitespace I have by not coaching 30-ish hours a week. The opportunity I have to bump up the money I make from my extras (as I sometimes see em) is pretty infinite, and Im actually really excited to take on that challenge and see what happens (while still taking Care). Last April I signed up for Freckle. Even though I dont bill my clients hourly, I took them up on a free 30-day trial to see where my time was going. Of course, it totally hooked me, and Ive been using Freckle incessantly ever since. When the end of the year hit, I ran a report for the entire year, around both my projects and my tags. As you can see, the projects (above) are broader (although I have em by private client, I placed em all together for these purposes) while the tags themselves are more specific. At least I can see that Im spending more time consistently servicing my biggest moneymaker: my coaching clients! I spent about 611 hours on their work the sessions themselves, set-up and follow-up but then it was interesting to see that social media is my #2 time-taker. Blogging, tweeting, newslettering and Facebooking took 144-ish hours, and I get paid nada con nada for that! Yes, I know its where/how I find a lot of clients, but.it seems excessive/unsmart in some way. Its som ething I dont wanna ramp down this year, but something I wanna do smarter. I made this brand-new last month, going over all my numbers from 2010 and makin a handy-dandy at-a-glance chart to see what I could, um, see. And as you can probably, uh, see August is consistently my killer month! It also made me realize that, even though I can see how much money is coming in each month and I categorize it out, I dont track my purchases month-by-month.so Im not sure what I do in August that I dont do otherwise! I do know that its usually the start of my fall Operations!but other than that, Im not sure what Im selling more of or what magic fairy visits my PayPal account each August. While I take a Business Building Day each month to count my moolah and figure out client averages and demographics and whatnot, I just added a whole slew of stuff to my Magic Formula Google Doc (which is where the Magic lives) to include stuff like how many Operations! applications came in that month and how many Running Over Resolution Roadblocks sold and how many people switched from Team Coolness to Team Badass (whichll make sense on Tuesday when you get to know aaaaaaaaall about the amazeballsness of my Clubhouse!). While it looks real laborious at first site, I know my main platforms (Batchbook, Outright and PayPal) will make running reports and gettin info easy-breezy. And see those extra lines up there at the top? Im reachin, baby, Im reachin! Aaaaaaaaand heres where my where-my-clients-and-consultation-call-people-come-from stands! I was actually super surprised to see that my PR efforts namely being a guest (on blogs, telesummits, e-courses, etc) and giving interviews has gone the farthest (big fat note for those who think they cant launch a biz without shelling out the big bucks: all those PR opps I got myself and didnt pay a cent for). I love seeing that my personal connections are a close second, namely friends, colleagues, and other people who tell people bout me via word-of-mouth. The Blog category that came in third was for those that said they read about me on someones blog, and that could probably be under the same category as Social Media, but I separated it out (Social Media being Twitter and Facebook for me). Again, free referrals! I wanna disclose that if ya look at my referrals by the specific as in NameOfPersonHere or NameOfWebsiteHere I got the most from general web searches (which floors me), followed by Etsy, and then ready for this? How to Stay Creative at Work Tennis superstar Serena Williams wears the same dirty socks every day of a tournament. Model Heidi Klum carries around a bag of baby teeth. Singer Taylor Swift often paints the number â13â on her hand before big shows. These superstitions may sound silly (and kind of gross), but the idea of having a good luck charm isnât crazy. In fact, Tania Katan recommends you get your own â" and bring it to work. Katan, author of the recently released book Creative Trespassing, has spent years sneaking imagination into the office and using creativity to disrupt norms. One of her career tips is to use a power amulet, or a sentimental object, that she writes will âunleash the superpowers you already possess.â Though it wonât instantly make you Meghan Markleâs BFF, the amulet can give you the courage to succeed at work. âIt acts as a conduit until Iâm ready to accept my inner empowerment and magic,â Katan tells MONEY. Katanâs amulet advice goes back to her childhood, when her dad gave her a lucky rabbitâs foot. As a 4-year-old, sheâd rub the fur and somehow feel able to stand taller and speak up. Over time, she realized the rabbitâs foot itself wasnât enchanted. It just made her feel that way. In her book, Katan writes that you shouldnât write off that âpower of make-believeâ just because youâre a working adult. You can revive your inner genius by carrying an amulet whenever you have an important meeting or presentation you need to truly nail. Like with Williamsâ socks, having that lucky charm in your pocket can boost your spirits and make you feel more inspired. It can give you the push you need to voice your opinions, help colleagues, or pitch projects. âConfidence isnât something you wake up and have; itâs a practice,â Katan says. âAnd if these objects allow us to practice what it feels like to have power, one of these days weâll just feel confident. We wonât need the object.â Amulet or not, there are lots of ways to incorporate creativity into your career. Here are a couple of Katanâs favorites. Make Your Own Job Title Thereâs no way the words âassistant managerâ or âaccount supervisorâ accurately describe everything you do at work. So why not create a new job title for yourself? Whether itâs official or unofficial, the title can help you show off your responsibilities and goals in a fun way. âPeople actually do and are things on the ground that are infinitely more creative than their job titles,â Katan says. âSometimes you gotta just say âF it,â make your job title and have those business cards printed out.â Inventing a job title comes with several benefits. As Katan writes in her book, calling yourself the âDispatching Divaâ or something similar can help you better understand your purpose at work. Itâs scientifically proven to make you as an employee feel better, and it can also help you stand out. Katan says people donât remember the vast number of normal business cards they collect at conferences and meetings. But they wonât forget the ones with out-of-the-box job titles. âIt adds a layer of human connection, of saying, âLook, we all have a sucky job title, but really hereâs what I feel about what I do and who I am,â she says. (A note on practicality: Katan acknowledges that you might not be actually allowed to go rogue and change your job title, though her book does have a whole other section where she advocates for taking permission. If thatâs the case, she proposes adding your inventive title to your standard one, like âJulia Glum, reporter and MONEYâs resident Bachelor expert.â Or you can use this as a team-building exercise and not actually print the titles â" the point is to get you thinking creatively.) Use Absurdity to Your Advantage Katanâs book talks about the importance of finding âyour inner T,â the intersection of your expertise in one or two subjects and general knowledge in many others. To do this, she suggests you invite people with various skill sets to brainstorm solutions to a problem at work. Then suspend disbelief and suggest ridiculous ideas. âWhen we really dig deep into what people are bringing to the table, what weâre making is even fuller than we intended,â she says. âWe can find areas to cross over and nurture those skills that arenât always apparent.â This is important because people come into work with certain expectations of how things will play out. Creativity blooms when you disrupt those preconceived notions. While searching for solutions, Katan says you should ask what-if questions, like âWhat if we could conduct a campaign launch in outer space?â Your teamâs responses may surprise you â" and help you toward a better end result. âIt leaves possibilities on the table that we donât know about yet,â Katan says. âYou donât know how many astronauts-in-training you might know.â

In this article, Iâm going to show you why âTri-Winningâ jobs are the kind everyone wants⦠⦠And give you the best way to get one. 1. The âLose-Winâ Job This is when you earn your living by working for a company thatâs doing more harm than good in the world. Their products and services innately harm humanity and/or the planet, and their sole purpose is to make a profit - no matter the cost. Itâs a âLose-Winâ because the world as a whole loses, but the organization (and you) are winning by making a profit. Except itâs really only a partial win, because your only reward is a paycheck. If youâre working in this category, you might not like hearing this. However, understand that I get why many of us have had to work in this category for one reason or another. We need to pay the bills and take care of our families, and thatâs ok. In fact, being able to easily find a job that earns an income and makes a difference is a relatively new development. However, where I hope youâll choose to spend your time and earn your living (one day soon) is in... 3. The âTri-Winningâ (Win-Win-Win) Job In this type of job, everyone wins (and Charlie Sheen would be proud). The planet and humanity are made better by the work you and your organization do. The business thrives. And you earn a great living while absolutely loving what you do. Clearly, this is the job that everyone wants.
